Labiaplasty

What is a labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a plastic surgery which involves trimming and shaping the labia minora (inner labia) and sometimes the surrounding clitoral hood. This is a short out-patient procedure with minimal downtime. Many women are born with large, asymmetric or irregular labia. Others experience undesirable changes to the labia after childbirth or aging. Often enlarged or abnormally shaped labia can cause pain, irritation and itching from tugging, rubbing and twisting. Additionally, many women experience discomfort with intercourse or feel self-conscious. Enlarged or asymmetric labia can be embarrassing when visible in a bathing suit or tight-fitting clothes and can often be uncomfortable when exercising. For many women, this may be something they’ve always been concerned about but afraid to ask.

What are the risks?

Risks of a labiaplasty are minimal. As with most surgical procedures, there are risks for bleeding, hematoma, infection or skin healing. Certain health habits or illness may affect healing as well. It is important to discuss this with your surgeon prior to having the procedure. Additionally, it is important to have a thorough discussion with your surgeon about desired outcomes and realistic expectations.

Most patients take a week or less off work and the self-dissolving sutures heal in two to four weeks. Patients often are recommended to place a cold pack on the area to reduce swelling. Generally swelling is minimal directly after surgery but results can vary based on the amount of excess tissue and patient anatomy. Patients may resume wearing tampons or having intercourse after four to six weeks. Regular exercise can be resumed after one to two weeks depending on individual healing.

What can be achieved?

The goal of a labiaplasty procedure is to reduce the labia minora so that they don’t hang below the hair-bearing labia majora. Most patients feel significant relief after surgery and multiple studies support a high satisfaction rate of over 90 percent!
